Jennifer Lauck tells the painful story of her life from age five to twelve in this moving and emotional memoir. She was born to parents educated and well respected and who had also given birth to a son about three years before Jennifer was born. She was close to her mother who she describes as beautiful and loving. Her mom however was suffering from multiple illnesses and was in and out of the hospital. Little Jennifer did everything to comfort and care for her mother but her mom's health was in a spiraling decline and she died when Jennifer was seven years old.
After her mother's death her father, a kind of high powered business man, moved the family in with his girlfriend and quickly remarried. The father went off to work leaving her and her brother in the care of a resentful and neurotic stepmother. When Jennifer was ten her father died of a heart attack and then she and her brother began the really tough phase of their life dealing with the traumatizing experiences of abandonment, grief, rejection, uncertainty and loneliness as children.
